Starting Over

•August 28, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Ok here’s the deal. I started this blog planing thinking that i would write on it every day and that pretty soon I’d have plenty of people reading it regularly and commenting on my posts. Well that didn’t really happen. The only comments i got were from friends at uni who only really wrote something because they felt sorry for me. I think my real problem was that i wrote the wrong kind of stuff. I’d thought I’d fill this thing with my thoughts, serious random, funny or profound. Turns out my thought really aren’ t that interesting.

So anyway, I’m starting again. I’m still going to put up my random, funny, or profound thoughts, but I’m no longer going to limit my posts to that. I’m going to write about my life as well from now on. Not just the boring “i went to uni, i had a lecture,  i went home.” I’ll try to be a bit more interesting than that and I’ll still have my little quirks coming though in what i say. the basic Idea is that I’m going to write more. If people read it they read it, it they don’t they don’t (gee really, wow that’s profound). Obviously I’d rather if people were reading what i have to say, but if they don’t that’s no longer going to worry me.

Anyway this is my start, i’ll try to write atleast once a week mabey more.

On Education

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. Since this blog is supposed to be a record of thought, one may reasonably be led to question whether it has been as long since I’ve had a thought. The fact is I’ve spent the last three weeks immersed in exam study and preparation. Since exams are largely a matter or regurgitating what either the text book or lecturer has to say it could reasonably be argued that I have in fact not had a thought of my own for at least the last three weeks. It is rather puzzling that our education system places such value on the ability to express what someone else thinks. There seems to be very little space for expressing your own original thought.

It is true that there is the occasional field of study where original thought is encouraged, but this privilege is usually reserved only for the most esteemed members of the upper academic circles. Take philosophy for example. Of all arias of study this surly would be the most likely to encourage original though, after all philosophy is “the love of wisdom”. But even in this most wise are of academic enquiry it is not original thought that is valued, but the ability to quote the thoughts of those who have gone before you. Lecturers are not interested in a students own insight on an issue but their ability to explain the insights of Kant, Plato, Descartes and so on.

It seems to me that you need at least PhD before anyone will show interest in thoughts of your own. Even then all you have achieved is to add to the great list of thinkers who future students will be forced to quote at great length.

What’s It All About?

I’ve been thinking. For those of you who don’t know me the contents of my Blog must seem a little confusing. For those of you who do know me in person, and thought i was relatively normal, sorry you were wrong.

So what am i all about? Is this a Blog for humorous posts about the I.Q. of carrots, or is it for serious contemplation of human nature. The truth is, as far as i’m concerned there is no difference. This is a Blog for thoughts, some are mine, some belong to others. Serious, funny, or slightly insane, a thought is a thought.

If in life we find death

And in death a new life

Then in ending our life

And thus ending this death

Will we find life eternal

Or simply greater depths

Of this death that we live

Life’s End

Beyond the lands of endless night

A fear above all fears

Where undead souls of men we fight

And memories of lost years

On battle grounds of crimson light

The cry of anguish sears

Fall friend and foe for justice right

Death whispers in our ears

Those foes shall quiver at the sight

The hour of reckoning nears

As days of fear give way to light

And anger lost to tears

Perspective

Perspective, use it or lose it.

Life is a joke, a beautiful, hilarious, and tragic joke on us all. Remember where you came from, where you’re going, and how you go yourself into this mess in the first place. It’s all for fun, and you’ll enjoy it more if you keep that in mind. Do maintain a certain amount of seriousness however; laughing on the way to the executioner will generally see you labeled a mad man.

Elephant Jumping

The elephant is the only land mammal that can’t jump. Not surprising really, when you consider the amount of weight they’d have to get of the ground. However this does call allot of my previously held beliefs into questions. Not the least on which is my absolute faith in cartoons. It is a well known fact to all cartoon enthusiasts that elephants are terrified of mice. Should an elephant happen upon a mouse it will do everything within it’s power to escape. this often includes JUMPING onto tabels, chairs or any other surface that can put some distance between themselves and the mouse which is invariably on the floor (i even saw an elephant JUMP to the top of a lamp post once). If an elephant cannot jump HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?

If you ask me Walt Disney has allot to answer for.
